Not every garden owner has a chance to build or buy even the smallest greenhouse. The hotbeds (tunnels) are a great solution in such situations. There are high and low tunnels. The high tunnels are similar to greenhouses - work is performed by being inside. The low tunnels or hotbeds are tended by lifting the side of a film. The tunnels are ventilated by lifting the film on ends or by removing the film cover during the day and placing it back at night.
Film hotbeds have lower heat retention. Thus, the hotbeds are used for more cold-resistant plants (salads, strawberries, and asparagus). Due to the low volumes of air, the microclimate in the hotbeds is worse than greenhouse microclimate, therefore the hotbeds are used in spring and at the start of the summer. At later stages, the film can be removed and plants can grow under the clear sky.
Plants that are planted in a hotbed can be watered both by a hose and a watering can by lifting the film up. However, due to the placement of the plants in a tunnel the plants are harder to water (all water goes on to the leaves) thus, the drip irrigation system will be a more convenient solution. Drip watering provides a more efficient and uniform water supply.
When the blooming starts, bees, bumblebees and other insects must have access to the plants, which means that the film should be removed. It must also be done in colder weather by slightly lifting the film up. When the warm time comes, the film can be removed completely and left nearby, if the cold weather returns. At the end of the summer, the plants (especially tomatoes and paprika) can grow bigger than the tunnel. It is recommended to plant these plants in the high tunnels.
