Food and organic waste utilization is a very important issue, especially during hot summer months. Everyone remembers stinking compost heaps or special muck holes. Modern compost bins can solve all problems of organic waste processing.
The garden compost bin working principle is simple: various types of organic waste - food (except meat and dairy products), weeds, fallen leaves, fruits, branches, etc., are placed in a compost bin with a lid. The organic waste must be ground up before placement in the bin, and it must be covered with a layer of peat or soil.
Adequate air exchange is required to avoid rot and formation of mould. To ensure this you will need to periodically turn the pile. The compost bin must have special holes in walls and in the bottom to allow for water outflow and air entry on all sides.
As the result of microorganism activity, the organic material decomposes and turns into compost. To speed up the process you can also use special biologic products.
In the end, the organic material should turn into a dry, powdery organic fertilizer of a dark colour, which is almost uniform, without any mildew or insects.
When choosing a compost bin, the size should be determined by the planned volume of organic waste. The compost bin can be made of any material: metal, wood, plastic; however, it must be able to withstand the load, conduct and retain heat, which promotes the activity of microorganisms.
Happy harvest!
